Natural Rubber Dog Toys: What to Look For Before You Buy
Size, thickness, wear and cleaning: a simple checklist for choosing a rubber toy your dog can enjoy safely.
Walk into any pet shop from Dublin to Düsseldorf and you will see a whole wall of rubber dog toys. Many of them look almost the same. Yet one survives for ages while another is in pieces by teatime. If you are choosing a natural rubber dog toy for the first time, or replacing one your dog has already defeated, a few quick checks will help you spend your money well.
This guide explains what to look at before you buy: size, wall thickness, shape, smell, cleaning, and the signs that a toy has reached the end of its life.
Choose a natural rubber dog toy by your dog's weight and chewing style first. It should be too large to swallow, with thicker walls for strong chewers and a shape that is easy to fill and clean. Check it for cracks and missing pieces after every session, replace it once it is worn, and supervise your dog while they chew.
Why choose natural rubber for a dog toy?
Natural rubber is firm enough to take a lot of licking and chewing, yet it still has a little give.
Every Freezbone dog toy is made from natural rubber. Our product descriptions call the material non-toxic and biodegradable, and every dog toy in the range is dishwasher safe. Those are the claims we can stand behind. They are also the two questions worth asking about any rubber toy: what exactly is it made of, and how do you get it clean?
Be careful with any toy, ours included, that is sold as indestructible. No rubber toy is. A determined dog can damage almost anything with enough time, so the checks below matter more than any label on the box.
What size rubber toy does my dog need?
Pick the size by your dog's weight, and make sure the toy is too big to fit fully inside their mouth.
A toy that is too small can become a choking risk. A toy that is too big is awkward to hold, and your dog may soon ignore it. Good toys list a weight range, so start there. If your dog sits between two ranges or chews hard, go up a size. Our Freezbone size guide by weight and chewing style matches every toy to a dog.
| Toy | Size and capacity | Made for |
|---|---|---|
| FreezBall (four sizes) | Holds 60 ml up to 350 ml, depending on size | Moderate chewers, from under 5 kg up to 40 kg |
| Freez Doughnut S or L | 110 mm and 80 ml, or 140 mm and 120 ml | Strong chewers of 5 to 10 kg or 10 to 20 kg |
| Freezflower Cup S or L | 180 ml or 320 ml | Dogs of 5 to 20 kg or 20 to 40 kg |
| Freezbox | 100 mm across, holds up to 350 ml | The strongest chewers, 10 to 30 kg |
| FreezJumbo Large or XXL | 420 ml or 700 ml | Big dogs and power chewers |
How thick should a rubber dog toy be?
The harder your dog chews, the thicker the walls need to be.
Gentle lickers and older dogs are happy with lighter toys and open shapes. Puppies need something small jaws can grip, which our guide to frozen toys for teething puppies covers. Dogs who grind, crunch and try to tear off chunks need dense, thick-walled designs.
In our range, that means the Freezbox, made from ultra-durable natural rubber, and the FreezJumbo, which has extra-thick walls. If your dog destroys most things within a week, read which chew toys survive power chewers before you buy anything.
What shape works best for a fillable toy?
Choose a shape that fits how you will use it: a steady base for frozen fills, grooves for slower licking, and an opening wide enough to clean.
- Flat base: the Freezbox sits on a wide, flat base, so it does not tip while you fill and freeze it.
- Spirals and grooves: the FreezSwirl and the FreezCone use a swirl or spiral groove, so your dog has to work for every lick.
- Compartments: the FreezWheel has several sections, which is handy if you like to mix two or three fills.
- Deep cavity: the FreezJumbo holds enough food to stand in for a feeding bowl.
Think about your freezer as well. A low, wide toy like the FreezSwirl slides into a packed freezer drawer far more easily than a tall one.
Should a natural rubber toy smell?
A mild rubbery smell is normal for new natural rubber, and it tends to soften after a wash or two.
A strong chemical smell is a different story. If a toy smells harsh, or leaves a sticky film on your hands, ask the seller what it is made of before your dog gets it. Some owners are pleasantly surprised by what they find.
“Had a really pleasant smell, strangely! I like that they sit on a base, so if I have a lazy dog who waits until it melts it doesn't puddle everywhere.”

How do I know when a rubber toy is worn out?
Look it over after every session, and retire it at the first sign of real damage.
Still fine
- Light scratches and tooth marks on the surface
- Slightly faded colour
- The same shape and firmness as when it was new
Time to replace
- Cracks or splits, especially around the opening
- Missing pieces, or bits your dog can pull loose
- Rubber that feels sticky, crumbly or unusually soft
- Any part that is now small enough to swallow
If your dog swallows a piece of any toy, call your vet for advice straight away.
Is it safe to leave my dog alone with a rubber toy?
Supervise at first, and only step away once you know how your dog uses that toy.
Watch the first few sessions closely. Does your dog lick and settle, or do they start attacking the rubber itself? A happy licker can usually enjoy a frozen toy while you cook or answer emails in the same room. A dog who chews to destroy needs a tougher toy and closer watching. If your dog starts chewing an empty toy just for the sake of it, take it away and offer it again next time it is full.
“My dog does great with the freeze bone and the rubber holds up to his chewing.”

How do I clean a natural rubber dog toy?
Rinse it as soon as your dog has finished, then wash it in warm soapy water or in the dishwasher.
All Freezbone dog toys are dishwasher safe, and for the FreezJumbo and the FreezCone the top rack is recommended. For any other brand, follow the maker's instructions. A bottle brush reaches into grooves, and letting the toy dry fully stops old food from building up. Our step-by-step guide on how to clean a frozen dog toy goes into more detail.
What should I check before I buy?
Run through these six questions in the shop or on the product page.
- Does the weight range match my dog, with room to size up?
- Is the toy too big for my dog to swallow?
- Are the walls thick enough for the way my dog chews?
- Does the shape or base suit frozen fills?
- Can I reach and clean every corner?
- Do I know what it is made of?
A good natural rubber toy is the right size, thick enough, easy to clean and checked often. Get those four things right and it will earn its place in your dog's day, whether that day is a wet evening in Galway or a slow, hot afternoon in Valencia.
Frequently asked questions
-
Yes, as long as the size suits your puppy and you supervise. Choose a small toy your puppy can grip but not swallow, keep sessions short, and size up as they grow. Frozen fills can also feel soothing during teething.
-
Freezbone toys are designed to be filled and frozen. You can pack them with soft food or a liquid fill and freeze them for a few hours or overnight. For other brands, check the maker's instructions before freezing.
-
It depends on the toy and on how hard your dog chews. A gentle licker may use the same toy for a long time, while a heavy chewer wears toys out faster. Replace any toy as soon as it cracks, splits or loses pieces.
-
The Freezbox is our most rugged toy, made from ultra-durable natural rubber for the strongest chewers of 10 to 30 kg. The FreezJumbo, with its extra-thick walls, is made for big dogs and power chewers. Even so, no toy is indestructible, so always supervise a heavy chewer.
-
Take the toy away and look for the missing piece. If you think your dog has swallowed it, call your vet for advice. Then replace the toy with a tougher design or a larger size.
