Best Chew Toys for Power Chewers: What Survives and Why
Our toughest fillable toys for strong jaws, how to choose one, and the honest truth about indestructible.
Some dogs open a new plush toy, find the squeaker and leave a snowstorm of stuffing across the floor before you have put the kettle on. Rope toys end up as loose threads on the balcony, and the "tough" ball from the shop has a chunk missing by the weekend. If that sounds like your dog, you share your home with a power chewer. The best chew toys for power chewers are not the ones that promise to be indestructible. They are thick, well-sized and give those strong jaws a job worth doing.
No dog toy is indestructible, so the best choice for a power chewer is a thick natural rubber toy in the right size, used with supervision. Fillable toys that you freeze turn hard gnawing into slow licking and working. Our toughest picks are the Freezbox, FreezJumbo, Freez Doughnut and FreezCone. Check toys after every session and replace them once they crack or lose pieces.
Is any dog toy truly indestructible?
No. Every toy wears down in the end, and a determined dog with strong jaws will always find the weak spot.
That is not a reason to give up. It simply changes the goal. Instead of hunting for a toy that never breaks, look for one that lasts well, stays safe while it wears and keeps your dog busy enough that they are not just gnawing for the sake of it. A good toy for a strong chewer is one you can trust while you watch, and one you replace before it becomes a problem.
The right question is not "will it break?" but "will it stay safe while my dog uses it?"
What makes a chew toy good for a power chewer?
Thick walls, one solid piece of natural rubber, the right size and a reason for your dog to lick instead of bite.
Lasts longer
- Thick natural rubber in one solid piece, with no glued parts
- A size well matched to your dog's weight, or slightly larger
- A cavity or grooves to fill, so there is food to work for
- A wide base that does not tip and spill
- Safe in the dishwasher for easy cleaning
Fails fast
- Plush toys with stuffing and squeakers
- Thin rubber or hollow plastic
- Rope toys that fray into swallowable threads
- Toys that are too small for your dog's mouth
- Anything with small parts that can come loose
Material matters too. Our guide to what to look for in natural rubber dog toys explains what separates a good one from a poor one.
Which Freezbone toys are best for strong chewers?
Our toughest designs are the Freezbox, FreezJumbo, Freez Doughnut and FreezCone, and all three toys in the Tough Chewer Bundle come from that group.
| Toy | Why it suits strong chewers | Size and capacity | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freezbox | Our most rugged design, in ultra-durable natural rubber with a wide, flat base | 100 mm, up to 350 ml, for dogs of 10 to 30 kg | Relentless chewers of medium to large size |
| FreezJumbo | Our biggest toy, with extra-thick walls and a deep cavity | Large: up to 420 ml. XXL: up to 700 ml, designed for large breeds | Big dogs and frozen meals |
| Freez Doughnut | Extra-durable and built for power chewers, with a low, flat shape | Small: 80 ml, 5 to 10 kg. Large: 120 ml, 10 to 20 kg | Smaller dogs with strong jaws |
| FreezCone | Designed for tough chewers, with a spiral groove inside that slows dogs down | Up to 350 ml, best for medium dogs | Dogs who empty toys too quickly |
| Tough Chewer Bundle | The Freezbox, the FreezCone and a small Freez Doughnut in one set | Three shapes and challenges | Rotating toys through the week |
If your dog is a strong chewer of medium or large size, start with the Freezbox. It is the toughest toy we make and its flat base stays put on the floor.
How do I choose the right chew toy for my dog's size?
Match the toy to your dog's weight first, then size up if your dog chews hard or sits between two sizes.
- Weigh your dog. Stand on the bathroom scales holding your dog, then subtract your own weight, or ask your vet clinic to weigh them.
- Check the weight range. Each toy lists the dog weights it was made for. Our Freezbone size guide puts them all in one table.
- Size up for strong jaws. A larger toy gives more rubber to work through and is harder to fit fully in the mouth.
- Check the mouth test. A toy should never be small enough for your dog to fit completely in their mouth or swallow.
- Think about the job. For whole meals, choose a large capacity such as the FreezJumbo. For a short treat, a smaller toy is enough.
How do I make a tough toy last longer?
Fill it, freeze it, supervise the session and check the toy each time you wash it.
A frozen fill changes how your dog uses the toy. Instead of attacking the rubber, many dogs lick, push and work at the food inside. Freeze for a few hours or overnight so the fill is solid all the way through.
“Axle loves his Freezebone! Keeps him entertained for a good while and so far has been the only product of this sort that he hasn't even dented, and let me tell you, he destroys everything”
Andrea C., verified buyer
- Supervise. Stay nearby while your dog has the toy, especially the first few times.
- Pick it up when it is empty. Once the food is gone, some strong chewers turn to the rubber itself.
- Rotate. Two or three toys used in turn get less wear each.
- Wash and inspect. All of these toys are dishwasher safe. The FreezJumbo and FreezCone are best on the top rack. Our guide on cleaning a frozen dog toy has more tips.
Good fills for strong chewers include soaked kibble, wet food, plain yoghurt with mashed fruit, and stock made without onion or garlic. Layer them so the best part sits at the bottom. The Freezbone recipe videos have plenty more ideas.
“My podenco is obsessed! Really great dog toy/ snack / multifunctional ice lolly”

If you want variety without guessing, a set lets you rotate tough toys through the week.
Which chew toys should power chewers avoid?
Avoid anything that splinters, cracks teeth, frays into threads or is small enough to swallow.
- Cooked bones of any kind, which can splinter
- Very hard chews such as antlers and hard nylon bones, which can crack teeth
- Sticks, which can splinter in the mouth and throat
- Plush toys and rope toys left with your dog unsupervised
- Balls and toys small enough to swallow
- Any toy with cracks, missing chunks or edges chewed thin
If your dog swallows a piece of any toy, or seems unwell after chewing, call your vet straight away.
Do puppies who chew hard need different toys?
Puppies need a size that fits them now, gentle fills and short, supervised sessions.
Many puppies chew hard because they are teething, not because they will be power chewers as adults. A smaller frozen toy can soothe sore gums and saves your table legs. Move up a size as they grow. Our guide to puppy teething and frozen toys explains more.
In short: no toy is indestructible, but the right one lasts well and stays safe. Choose thick natural rubber, size up for strong jaws, fill and freeze it, supervise, and replace any toy that cracks or loses pieces.
Frequently asked questions
-
The Freezbox is our most rugged design. It is made from ultra-durable natural rubber, holds up to 350 ml and suits dogs of 10 to 30 kg. For very large dogs, the FreezJumbo XXL is our biggest toy and is designed for large breeds and power chewers.
-
Power chewers tend to destroy plush toys within minutes, shred rope toys and leave deep marks or missing chunks in rubber toys. They often chew with real force rather than just mouthing or licking.
-
Replace a toy as soon as it cracks, loses pieces or has edges chewed thin, however new it is. Check it each time you wash it. A toy with damage is no longer safe to leave with your dog.
-
It is safest to supervise, especially at first and with strong chewers. Watch how your dog uses the toy over several sessions. Pick it up once the food is gone, as some dogs turn to the rubber when the fill runs out.
-
Thick natural rubber is one of the better materials for strong chewers because it has some give and is less likely to crack teeth than very hard chews. No material is risk-free, so choose the right size, supervise and replace toys when they wear. Our toys are made from biodegradable, non-toxic natural rubber.
-
Start with the weight range listed for each toy. If your dog is a strong chewer or sits between two sizes, choose the larger one. A toy should never be small enough to fit completely in your dog's mouth.
