Freezbone Size Guide: The Right Toy for Your Dog's Weight and Chewing Style
Every toy's weight range, capacity and diameter in one table, plus how to size for chewing style.
Buying a frozen toy for your dog should be simple, but the sizes can be confusing. Too small, and a strong dog can fit the whole thing in their mouth. Too big, and a small dog has to wrestle with it on the kitchen floor. This Freezbone size guide puts every weight range, capacity and diameter we list in one place, so you can match the right toy to your dog's weight and chewing style in a couple of minutes.
Choose by your dog's weight first and chewing style second. The FreezBall comes in S (under 5 kg), M (up to 10 kg), L (up to 25 kg) and XL (up to 40 kg). The Freez Doughnut, FreezFlower Cup, Freezbox and FreezSwirl each list their own weight ranges below. If your dog chews hard or sits between two sizes, pick the larger one.
What size Freezbone does my dog need?
Find your dog's weight in the left column, then pick from the toys made for that weight.
| Dog's weight | Toys made for this weight | Capacity and diameter |
|---|---|---|
| Under 5 kg | FreezBall S | 60 ml, 60 mm |
| 5 to 10 kg | FreezBall M (up to 10 kg) Freez Doughnut S (5 to 10 kg) FreezFlower Cup S (5 to 20 kg) | 120 ml, 80 mm 80 ml, 110 mm 180 ml, 100 mm |
| 10 to 20 kg | FreezBall L (up to 25 kg) Freez Doughnut L (10 to 20 kg) FreezFlower Cup S (5 to 20 kg) Freezbox (10 to 30 kg) FreezSwirl (10 to 40 kg) | 250 ml, 90 mm 120 ml, 140 mm 180 ml, 100 mm 350 ml, 100 mm 170 mm across |
| 20 to 30 kg | FreezBall L (up to 25 kg) or XL (up to 40 kg) FreezFlower Cup L (20 to 40 kg) Freezbox (10 to 30 kg) FreezSwirl (10 to 40 kg) | 250 ml or 350 ml 320 ml, 140 mm 350 ml, 100 mm 170 mm across |
| 30 to 40 kg | FreezBall XL (up to 40 kg) FreezFlower Cup L (20 to 40 kg) FreezSwirl (10 to 40 kg) | 350 ml, 110 mm 320 ml, 140 mm 170 mm across |
| Over 40 kg | None of our toys lists a weight range above 40 kg. The FreezJumbo XXL is described as designed for large breeds and power chewers. | 700 ml, 130 mm wide and 90 mm high |
All sizes come from our product descriptions. Size names can differ slightly on a product page, so go by the weight range and capacity. If anything here differs from the product page, trust the product page.
Which Freezbone toys do not list a weight range?
The FreezJumbo and FreezCone describe the dogs they suit in words rather than kilograms, and the FreezCup and FreezWheel do not list a size at all.
| Toy | What we list | Described as suiting |
|---|---|---|
| FreezJumbo Large | Up to 420 ml, 100 mm wide and 75 mm high | Medium to large dogs, partial meals or daily enrichment |
| FreezJumbo XXL | Up to 700 ml, 130 mm wide and 90 mm high | Large breeds and power chewers, full meals |
| FreezCone | Up to 350 ml | Medium dogs and tough chewers |
| FreezCup | No size or capacity listed | No weight range given |
| FreezWheel | No size or capacity listed | No weight range given |
For these toys, think about your dog's build and how much food you want the toy to hold. If you are unsure, choose a toy from the first table instead, where the weight range is clear.
How do I find out how much my dog weighs?
Weigh your dog rather than guessing from their breed, because dogs of the same breed can vary a lot.
- Use the bathroom scales. Weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding your dog, and subtract the first number from the second.
- Ask at the vet clinic. Most clinics have a floor scale, and many will let you use it between appointments.
- Weigh puppies often. A growing puppy can move up a size within weeks.
- Note it down. Write the weight and date on your phone so you have it when you shop.
“Like the simplicity of style and good size for my border terrier, keeps her busy and she loves the different frozen recipes, mostly made from everyday ingredients already in the house”

How does chewing style change the size I should buy?
Weight gives you the starting size. Chewing style tells you whether to size up or choose a tougher toy.
Gentle lickers
Dogs who mostly lick and rarely bite down can use any toy in their weight range. Licking-friendly shapes such as the FreezSwirl or the FreezFlower Cup suit them well.
Moderate chewers
The FreezBall is made for moderate chewers, and its four sizes cover dogs from under 5 kg to 40 kg. Stick to the size for your dog's weight.
Strong chewers
Choose one of our toughest designs: the Freezbox, Freez Doughnut, FreezJumbo or FreezCone. If your dog sits near the top of a weight range, go up a size. A bigger toy gives more rubber to work through and is harder to fit fully in the mouth. Our guide to the best chew toys for power chewers compares them in detail.
Do puppies and senior dogs need a different size?
Size puppies for the weight they are now, and choose easy, low shapes for older dogs.
A puppy needs a toy that fits their mouth today, not the dog they will be in a year. Start small, keep sessions short and move up as they grow. Our article on puppy teething and frozen toys explains how frozen toys can help with sore gums.
Older dogs often prefer flat toys they can lick while lying down, such as the Freez Doughnut or FreezSwirl, in the size for their weight. See our ideas for gentle enrichment for senior dogs.
What does capacity mean, and how much should I fill?
Capacity, in millilitres, tells you how much food the toy holds. A bigger capacity means a longer session or a larger part of a meal.
A small toy holding 60 to 120 ml is a snack. A toy holding 350 ml or more, such as the Freezbox, FreezCone or FreezJumbo, can carry a good share of a meal. Whatever you put in, take it out of your dog's normal daily food so their total stays the same.
“My dog loves these. The bigger ones hold an entire can of wet dog food, and the smaller ones about half a can. I’ve started freezing all his meals because he loves these so much.”

Freezbone tip
Leave a little space at the top when you fill, as liquids expand slightly as they freeze. Freeze for a few hours or overnight so the fill is solid all the way through. Our Freezbone recipe videos show easy fills for every size.

Which Freezbone size should I choose?
Weigh your dog, find their weight in the table, then think about how they chew. Lickers can take any toy in their range, moderate chewers suit the FreezBall, and strong chewers do best with a tougher design one size up. When in doubt, choose the larger size: a toy that is a little big is safer than one that is too small.
Frequently asked questions
-
Go by weight. The FreezBall S suits dogs under 5 kg, the M dogs up to 10 kg, the L dogs up to 25 kg and the XL dogs up to 40 kg. If your dog chews hard or sits at the top of a range, choose the next size up.
-
None of our toys lists a weight range above 40 kg. The FreezJumbo XXL, which holds up to 700 ml, is described as designed for large breeds and power chewers. Supervise your dog and check the toy after each use.
-
Choose the larger size. A toy that is slightly too big is safer than one your dog could fit fully in their mouth. This matters most for strong chewers.
-
Yes, as long as your dog can lick and reach the food comfortably. A larger toy simply holds more, so fill it less and take the food out of their daily allowance. Very small dogs may find a big, heavy toy awkward to move around.
-
The Tough Chewer Bundle contains a Freezbox, a FreezCone and a small Freez Doughnut. The Freezbox is listed for dogs of 10 to 30 kg, the FreezCone is described as best for medium dogs, and the small Freez Doughnut suits dogs of 5 to 10 kg. It works well for a medium-sized strong chewer, or for a home with dogs of different sizes.
